Visibility, Continuity of Supply and Risk Management in US Government Client 

The Challenge

A US government client faced three primary supply chain vulnerabilities. (1) They lacked real-time visibility and control over the components and microelectronics that went into electronic devices procured by the Department of Defense. (2) They had inadequate sources of supply and difficulty comparing new and existing authorized sources of supply. And (3) they had insufficient means of assessing security or product integrity risk. 

The Solution

Our supply chain provenance solutions gave the client real-time visibility and control over the components and materials of their supply chain. It enabled them to identify authorized distributors, alternative manufacturers & sources of supply, as well as to better characterize and quantify risks. The solution also addressed security and data governance challenges, ensuring product integrity and end-use customer safety at the DoD. Utilizing Supply Dynamics’ multi-dimensional approach to data curation, we implemented a fully customizable dashboard that displayed comprehensive risk analysis for electronic devices. We identified unknown components, mapped Bills of Material and tracked supply chain provenance. SDX also ascertained discreet & aggregate risk profiles, including: country of origin, authorized distributors, manufacturers of the components, current inventory levels, & custom curated risks fields. We used role-based risk profiles and configurable risk weightings to give functional users the flexibility to filter the data and sources of risk.

The Impact

Our solution gave the government client a comprehensive risk breakdown of supplier & component attributes, discreet & composite risk profiles and real-time supply chain provenance discovery.  Key deliverables included the ability to:

  • Understand part attributes P/N Characteristics (price, voltage, package, mount, footprint, etc.)
  • Rapidly identify authorized distributors, alternative manufacturers & sources of supply.
  • Forecast the obsolescence of components using Years to EOL Algorithm.
  • Identify alternative suppliers, P/Ns.
  • Monitor, in real-time, supplier inventory levels and price.
  • Make educated component selections through standard risk analysis and scoring for microelectronic components.
  • Aggregate risk analysis over an assembly’s detail parts.
